A Review on Foraging Trajectories in Termites: Insights from Lévy Walks to Ecological Behavior

Résumé

This review examines the foraging trajectories of termites, focusing on the movement patterns of species foraging on ground surface. Mathematical studies on Cornitermes cumulans trajectories suggest that termites exhibit Lévy walk behaviour, with step lengths following a power law distribution rather than a uniform pattern. Social context, density, and caste composition influence termite movement, with low-density groups displaying more Lévy-like patterns, while higher densities lead to more Brownian-like behaviour. However, laboratory-based experiments may not fully capture natural foraging dynamics. This paper suggests further studies in more ecologically relevant settings to explore whether initial foraging movements align with Lévy walk models and to gain a deeper understanding of collective foraging strategies in termites.
