Exploring Interactions with Tangible and Actuated Tokens on a Shared Tabletop for Railway Traffic Management Control Centres

Abstract

While control centres are increasingly incorporating digital tools, particularly with the expanding train traffic worldwide, the role of humans remains essential. This is particularly true in case of crisis, where operators with different expertise need to collaborate to make critical decisions. We visited different control centres to observe how operators work, especially in crisis scenarios, and identify the limits of the current approaches. Inspired by this, we developed a prototype to investigate the use of actuated tangible tokens on a tabletop to visualise and explore different solutions to resolve incidents. To gauge the implications and opportunities of our approach, we performed a qualitative study with 37 operators in a high-speed train control centre. Our results suggest that actuated tangible tokens on a shared display constitute a promising tool for information sharing, context understanding, problem solving and collaboration.
